Medieval Walls

The crumbling medieval walls that once kept enemies out of Scarlino were built during the 11th century.

Centuries later they were rebuilt by the Aldobrandeschi family who kept them in good nick right up until they, and the city, passed into the hands of the City of Pisa.

Two doors – Porta Pisana and Porta Senese – were the only ways into the medieval town and are today the best preserved parts of the walls.
