Diacca Botrona

One of Europe’s most important nature reserves, Diaccia Botrona is only a short drive from Castiglione della Pescaia and is renowned for its rare ecosystem, where a host of micro organisms, plants and animals of all species live in perfect harmony.

Today over 200 different birds species visit the reserve each year, while foxes, badgers, wild geese, porcupines, eels, fish and rare types of orchids also call this reserve home.

To visit the protected all you need are some binoculars and some very hardy shoes that won’t get stuck in all the mud. While you’re out there keep an eye out for the flamingos as Diacca Botrona is one of the few areas in Italy where you can admire these lovely birds!

But if trapping through wetlands is not your cup of tea, you can avoid the mud and admire the reserve via the live feed installed in the Casa Rossa multimedia museum almost all year round instead. The centre also displays all the research that is currently being untaken in the reserve by local and international scientists.
